Portrait Commissions

'Celebrate your furry friend with a custom pet portrait'

A commissioned portrait can be a fantastic present for yourself or as a gift for a special occasion such as Birthdays, Christmas, Valentines etc.

So when booking in it's very important to have a date in mind that it needs to be completed by and make sure you state this in your pet portrait commission request.

Katie will do her best to accommodate the date you require and endeavour to get the portrait completed within the timescale. She will send you regular updates throughout the process and answer any questions you might have.

She has drawn many portraits of dogs, cats and horses, as well as sheep & a tortoise!

'Window to the soul' - Unique pet portraits

spaniel pet portrait colour pencil commission

As well as the standard commissions Katie also offers "Window to the soul" portraits, these are a very special way of capturing a different reflection in your pets eyes.  It involves using one main reference photo for the pose and a separate photo to work with for the eye reflection. The idea behind this style of portrait is to look into their eyes and see an old memory/event. These can be wonderful touch for memorial portraits too. "I believe that when you look into their eyes you can see their soul, which is where this idea came from"   Due to the nature of these portraits, they are only suitable for single subjects on sizes 11"x14" & 12"x16". If you would like a quote for a portrait in this style please state this when filling in the contact form and please attach the photos that you would like to use.

FAQs

Questions and Answers

How do I take/choose the reference photos?

Katie works from photos (old and new) which must be CLEAR (not pixelated when you zoom in).

As an example when you zoom in you should be able to see detail such as the direction of the fur without it being blurred/pixelated.

It's also important to choose/take photos that are colour accurate and that represent their personalities.

Do I need to pay a deposit?

Yes - To book in it’s a 25% non refundable deposit to secure your space. Deposits are non refundable except for the rare chance that I, myself, am unable to complete your portrait, in which case I (Katie Hester) will give a full refund. The remaining balance is then due once the portrait has been completed before posting.

Postage & Packaging

Cost and is it discreet?

(Uk only) P & P is an additional £15 - it is shipped via Royal Mail next day special delivery which is tracked, insured and signed.

Overseas postage costs are to be confirmed with me depending on where you are in the world.

The packaging Katie uses is discrete with only your name and address on the front as well as “DO NOT BEND & HANDLE WITH CARE” labels on it. The same labels on the back with her name & address incase of return. There is no mention of what could be inside so it can be kept a secret/surprise if the recipient is at home.

She is however more than happy to post to any address you choose as long as someone is there to receive the delivery.

Katie uses cardboard envelopes with the portrait sandwiched inside two more layers of cardboard for protection as it is posted flat.

What is your timescale and the process once the portrait has been started?

Each commission varies in timescale from 1 - 3+ weeks to complete depending on the subject and what the portrait entails. So please state whic date you require the finished portrait by in order to get it completed in time.

Before starting the portrait Katie will contact you to let you know that she will be starting soon. Then she will start your portrait and send you photo updates via social media, email or WhatsApp  (you decide) of the progress stages so that you can see how it comes together. Once the portrait is completed Katie will send you the final photo of it including her watermark. If you are 100% happy, the remaining balance is then due. The portrait will then be removed from the drawing board and packed up ready to post. As soon as it has been posted Katie will send you the Royal Mail tracking number - Special delivery.

What does the price list include?

The price list is for a single subject head to neck. If you require full body it is only suitable on A4 or above in size which is an additional 25%. So please specify in the contact form and Katie will give you an accurate quote.

She can do other sizes to suit you so let her know if you require anything in particular.

There is no background included, however if you do require a basic background please state this in your request as Katie may be able to do it.

No frames or mounts are provided for pet portrait at this time.

If you have a specific idea in mind for a composition or would like the portrait to be with various extras please let me know.

Important information when choosing/taking the best reference photos for the portrait.

Reference photos

Reference photo requirements

Photographs taken outside without flash or by a large window are the best to avoid red eye (Please don’t use flash). Face the pet at the window so you can see more reflection and light in the eyes- super important. This will also help to get a nice lighting for the coat - (NOT the window behind the pet- it must be facing out at the window for this to work)! If you can’t however go outside please just make sure that if your having a colour portrait, the photo is colour accurate! Katie can only replicate what she sees so it must be the right colour. Choose your photos accordingly and tell her of any changes that need to be made please. - Try to avoid really sunny days as the sun will cast dark shadows on your pet (especially dark eyes), likewise avoid a really dull overcast day. However don’t over stress as some slight changes can be made to make it more accurate (as long as she's told).  - Ideally, take your photographs with your back to the sun, but try to make sure your pet isn’t squinting. The eyes need to have colour and NOT be black, to make sure they look alive on paper. The more reflection in the eye the better. Please make sure the eyes are clear and crisp where possible so they can be depicted the same in your portrait.  - Take your pets photograph at their level rather than looking down to avoid any distortion or an unnatural pose. Make sure the whole of your pet is in the photo with no missing parts (half a nose, ear etc). Preferably that also the pet is not directly facing forward but slightly to the side. (If a pet is facing forward it can make the nose look too enlarged and less realistic when drawn). - Try to get as close to your pet as possible whilst staying in focus as this will give the maximum amount of detail and make drawing the portrait easier and more accurate. If you zoom in and it’s blurry Katie won’t be able to use that reference photo. When you zoom in you should be able to clearly see the direction of the hairs or even better the hairs themselves. Photos must be head to shoulders (as close as possible) for reference to work from when doing a head to neck portrait. Same applies for full body.  - The photographs that Katie is to work from must be clear. It is helpful if you can send a selection of photos to choose from (between 4 and 6 photos minimum is preferred however the more photos the better if possible). She is happy to look through 100+ if it helps! This gives her a better idea of what your pet looks like. The better the photos, the better your finished portrait will be. Please no low resolution blurry photos. - Katie also knows that a memorial portrait can be harder to do especially if the reference photos are limited however she will do her very best to work with the photos that are given. She is also very understanding of the emotional impact that this type of portrait might have. - Please let her know if there is one particular pose preferred too with the selection of photos. As where possible she will use that for the main pose.
